If You UPGRADE Your Writing And Business Skills, You'll Be Successful!
Many writers assume that because they have a talent, that talent will
somehow speak for itself, and will shine through, bringing with it recognition
and money, without any effort on the part of the writer.
Nothing is further from the truth. Writing like any other business
takes upgrading of skills from time to time and consistent promotional
efforts. I know I've constantly added to my own skill set over the years.
I started out by simply doing contractual writing, bought more equipment,
added marketing to my services, and now years later offer a whole range
of services, from all inclusive marketing campaigns, to complete business
development.
With these goals in mind, I've taken classes in html (this was almost
necessary years ago), and other technology studies, studied different
and varied genres of writing, and also taken classes in leadership skills,
and speaking and presentation.
As a result, I'm also now team leader on several large outsourcing
projects cross-culturally. A grind, to learn all this? You bet. But
this has made me more attractive to those looking for independent contractors
that can fulfill all their needs, and this has been and is a growing
trend in business now.
It's the same when you work within the confines of traditional employment,
though. The more skilled you are, the more attractive you become to
employers. Being a freelancer, or a business owner, or an independent
contractor, doesn't mean we can leave our skill sets stagnate or even
diminish. On the contrary, we have to be aware of market trends, and
enhance our skill sets regularly in order to stay attractive to clients.
To put it quite bluntly, "The more you learn, the more you earn"!

OH NO! Clients Are Now After MY BODY And They'll PAY FOR IT!
It was bound to happen. I've given my soul and my mind for my writing
and marketing businesses over the years.
Today, I've had requests for advertising. Which of course, is usual.
What is unusual, is the type of advertising that is now requested.
I don't know how much any of you follow marketing trends in On Writing.
I follow them religiously as I do provide marketing as well as writing.
I also hang around here a lot in Business and Tech, and many there follow
these trends.
Marketing trends come and go as all trends do. Due to the rather "unique"
idea of one individual now, who is on Ebay and all the news shows with
his marketing idea, a new vehicle of marketing is being requested: body
tattoos.
There is a twenty year old man actively marketing his body as a type
of human billboard. He allows semi-permanent tattoos to be placed in
visible spots, forehead, hands, etc., which carry marketing messages,
phone numbers, names of companies, etc.
So of course, many of my clients love this idea and want my marketing
service to provide this. I don't know yet, really, if I'll go for this,
as the sheer cost in hours to sit and get these tattoos for me would
probably outweigh the prices most are willing to pay for this type of
advertising. But being the business person I am, I am considering it.
If you ever see a woman with the words, "Writing On The Wild Side"
emblazoned somewhere on her body, well, you'll know you've met me, finally,
in person!
In the meantime, if you write or have your own business, here are a
few cheap but good ways to promote it which don't entail your body or
semi-permanent inks:
1. Put your Web site address or business name and phone number on dollar
bills. If you have the name of a work you've published and it's location,
place that on the bills. It's estimated that each dollar bill passes
through millions of hands per year. That is millions of "exposures"
to your business or publication for the cost of each dollar. Who could
argue with that? Of course, it's totally untargeted, but it is very
cheap, too!
2. Hand out holiday goodies with your own business name, address, phone
and Web site for each holiday. Same goes for your publications. Dress
up and do this for Halloween, and leave these everywhere you go on other
holidays. Placing them in other businesses increases the targeting and
establishes a good rapport with other businesses.
3. Make sure you have a signature file at the bottom of each e-mail.
The name of your business or publications as well as all pertinent contact
info should always be automatically attached in your e-mails. This costs
nothing but your time!
4. Place a window cling with the name of your business or publications
in the windows of all your vehicles. These are really inexpensive and
they turn each vehicle into a moving billboard.
Well, I'll now have to decide whether I want to offer the "body
art" advertising displays or not. And then, if I do, I have to
decide where to place them on my body!

Part of my father's legacy
Part of my father's legacy was his leadership and activity in community
inspired clubs and organizations. As such, he spent much of his adult
life as a Boy Scout Leader.
Upon his death, he bequeathed one of his most treasured artifacts to
our family: a 1910 first edition complete Boy Scout Handbook.
This handbook was lovingly preserved, and is complete in all pages,
and in excellent condition, except for the natural weathering of the
years (which adds to its value and authenticity, actually).
A signal code, and decoding features are present, as well as all cloud
formations and plant explanations which are indigent to this manual.
An original 1940's ad for US tires is apparent on the back cover, as
well as a stamp for US rubber. All the old Scout title laws are covered
in this collector's edition, as are animals, birds and insects of North
America.
There are absolutely no creases on the pages, and the binding is still
as sturdy and strong as if it were printed just yesterday. A must have
for Scout Masters or the serious collector of Scout memorabilia. Also
a fine addition to any collection of yesteryear. Truly one of a kind.
